Standing Together During Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Standing Together During Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Each October, The Therapy Network pauses to reflect, remember, and show support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For us, it’s more than pink ribbons—it’s a personal acknowledgment of how many lives in our communities are touched by breast cancer.
Behind every diagnosis is a person with a family, a story, and a future worth fighting for. Every year, we make it a priority to join the movement, not only by raising awareness, but by coming together as a community to show care and compassion.
Why Breast Cancer Awareness Matters to Us
Breast cancer affects so many of our patients, staff, friends, and families. We see the ripple effects it creates, from the challenges of treatment to the strength it inspires in loved ones.
Acknowledging this month is our way of saying: we see you, we support you, and you are not alone.
Giving Back Together
In past years, we supported the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which provides early detection, education, and support like free mammograms and HOPE Kits.
Last year, we were inspired by the response to our PT for Pink fundraiser—patients, staff, friends, and families filled our clinics with pink and joined us for Wear Pink Wednesday.
This year, we’re keeping that spirit alive by focusing closer to home. We’re proud to partner with the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation, which advocates for Virginians, provides education, and ensures resources reach patients and families in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, and Norfolk. Supporting VBCF means directly supporting our neighbors.
Caring for Our Patients Every Step of the Way
Our mission extends beyond fundraising. Treatments save lives, but they can leave lasting side effects like fatigue, weakness, pain, and changes in mobility.
That’s why we offer an Oncology Rehabilitation Program, led by Mandi Dowdy, PT, DPT, Cert. MDT, at our Kempsville clinic. This program helps patients before, during, and after treatment by:
- Reducing fatigue and rebuilding strength
- Improving mobility and balance
- Addressing pain and inflammation
- Restoring confidence in daily life
As Mandi explains:
“Every patient is different, and every cancer is unique. Oncology rehabilitation works best when it is thoughtfully tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual. That’s the approach I carry with every patient — making sure they feel truly seen and heard, and supporting their recovery in a way that honors their unique journey and goals.”
How to Get Involved
At The Therapy Network, awareness is paired with action. That’s why we launched our PT for Pink fundraising fundraiser.
Last year, we were amazed by the outpouring of support. So many staff, patients, friends, and family picked up PT for Pink t-shirts to benefit the National Breast Cancer Foundation—and even more joined us for Wear Pink Wednesday, filling our clinics with hope and solidarity.
- Purchase a PT for Pink T-shirt – With a $10 donation, receive a shirt (while supplies last), and support the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation.
- Join us on Wear Pink Wednesday – Wear your shirt (or anything pink!) every Wednesday in October to show support.
- Spread the Word – Share posts, educational resources, and information with friends and family. Resources help with prevention, early detection, and support during and after treatment, so your voice can make a real impact.
Looking Ahead: A Commitment to Community
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is just one example of how we aim to stand with our community. We will continue seeking ways to support our patients, their families, and our neighbors across Hampton Roads—helping each person live their healthiest, fullest life.
This October, join us. Whether it’s by wearing pink, purchasing a PT for Pink t-shirt, or sharing words of encouragement and resources, every act of support makes a difference. Together, we are stronger.
